CORPUS Kids Academy – Sanne Wevers’ Body Orchestra

You spin, jump, and react. Meanwhile, your brain, muscles, and sense of balance work together.

On August 29, Olympic champion Sanne Wevers will be visiting CORPUS. Not only to show what gymnastics entails, but to help you feel what’s happening in your body. You’ll spin. You’ll balance. You’ll build muscle. You’ll test your reaction time.

Can you stay balanced?
Walk in a straight line. Spin around five times. Try it again. Chances are your feet will do something different than you intended. Your vestibular system is working overtime.

Where is your body?
You’ll be blindfolded and asked to move within a marked area on the floor. Will you stay in place, or will you slowly drift away? Without looking, you’ll suddenly feel just how hard your body has to work.

Build an elbow joint
Use popsicle sticks, split pins, and rubber bands to build an elbow joint. Pull, move it, and see what happens. Muscles make every jump, landing, and posture possible.

How quickly do you react?
Sticks fall. You catch them. Your brain, nerves, and muscles are constantly working together. Just like on the balance beam, where one small movement changes everything. 

Can you keep everything under control?
Step onto the balance beam or balance board. You’re holding a tray with a small ball on it. Can you stay balanced? Will the ball stay on the tray? Take on the challenge with Sanne Wevers.

Focus Like an Olympian
Sanne Wevers’ gold-medal-winning balance beam routine. Which parts of her body are involved? Balance, strength, and concentration. Circle the ones you recognize and discover how many things your body does at once.
